Nashville is Talking

Last night, I spoke with a couple of respected Democrats in Tennessee’s 6th Congressional District about what Rep. Bart Gordon’s announced retirement meant for a Democrat’s chances in 2010.
I got the same answer from both: it will be virtually impossible. Both cited the need to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars. Both cited needing to be a recognizable face with a trusted name, and both cited being able to out-message the “Tea Party” movement.
Neither seemed to be able to explain how that “Tea Party” movement managed to unnerve a 13 term Democrat with nothing more than loudness, signs and a few headlines, but one thing was clear to me. They didn’t do it by raising hundreds of thousands of dollars or needing recognizable faces with trusted names.
As potential candidates consider a run for Congress in the 6th District, what do you think a candidate should consider before seeking to serve the people of the district in Congress?
